Community

The road to opening The Spirit of Kalamazoo began with our family being frequent customers of downtown, and noticing the improvements in the city over the past 10 to 15 years. We felt that the re-opening of the Kalamazoo Mall and the establishment of The Kalamazoo Promise were catalyst events, central to the resurgence of downtown. As the momentum in Kalamazoo’s downtown increased, we decided that we wanted to be part of it.

As business owners and community members, we feel strongly about the importance of a strong vibrant community that takes care of its own. Since opening the store in September 2011, The Spirit of Kalamazoo, in partnership with its generous customers, has donated more than $5,000 in cash, merchandise and services to local charities. We believe in giving back to groups or individuals that are in need. These organizations are chosen based on customer and staff input and we donate to about six groups each year.

Please see the list below for some of the groups that we have donated to during our first four years of operation. We have been very fortunate to meet many great people through our store, and that has lead to many friendships and connections. The downtown business community has been very supportive as we work through the growing pains of a new business. Our support network and great customers have put us in a position to make contributions to these groups. We plan to do even more going forward.
